The palace which hosts the hotel was built in 1620 for the Fonseca family, aristocrats of Portuguese origin. At the beginning of the 19th century it was sold to a French family, the Sauve, who converted the building into a luxury hotel.

The 'Grand Tour'
'800
In 1800, thanks to its proximity to the Pantheon and the Parliament, the hotel has been the favorite venue of many artists, wealthy aristocrats, ecclesiastics and intellectuals who chose to stay at the Minerva during the Grand Tour.

The hotel memories include some extraordinary visits, such as the one of Pope Pius IX who came to meet Cardinal Aguirre, Bishop of Guayquir. Given the affluence of high-ranking prelates, the hotel was provided with a chapel where priests could say the Holy Mass.
